When Kincaid saw Nora Legend coming out the door he hoped she wasnât calling off the meeting.
âRight this way, gentlemen,â she said, and he felt better.
He got down, helped Doc Edwin, and they followed Nora into the building.
âEverybody is in the meeting room,â she said along the way.
âThatâs good,â Kincaid said.
She stopped in front of a set of double doors.
âIn you go,â she said.
They entered and she followed. None of the seated men got to their feet. At the head of the table Kincaid saw a man in his mid-forties, dark-haired and handsome.
âYou all know Dr. Edwin,â Nora said. âThis is Dr. Gabriel Kincaid.â
âDr. Kincaid,â the dark-haired man said, âIâm Mayor Everett. Do you know any of these gentlemen?â
Kincaid looked at the men, didnât recall ever having treated any of them.
âNo, I donât,â he said.
âWell,â the mayor said, âI believe Dr. Edwin does, so he can fill you in later. At the moment, we should get to the matter at hand. Please, have a seat.â
Kincaid and Doc Edwin sat side by side, while Nora went and took her chair.
âWe werenât expecting Dr. Edwin,â Everett said. âNora told us you wanted to address the council.â
âIâm here to support my colleague,â Doc Edwin said.
âI see,â Everett said. âAnd what, exactly, are you supporting, Doc?â
âIâll let Dr. Kincaid do the talkinâ,â Doc Edwin said.
âAll right, then,â Mayor Everett said, looking at Kincaid. âGo ahead. Nora indicated this was important.â
âOnly if the children in this county are important,â Kincaid began. âIâm sure you heard about the tragedy out at the old schoolhouse.â
âOf course,â the mayor said. âIt was terrible.â
âI was there,â Kincaid said. âI had to tell one mother her child had been killed.â
âHow awful,â Nora said.
âWhatâs your point, Doctor?â the mayor asked.
âMy point is, this wouldnât have happened if they had a new schoolhouse,â Kincaid said. âAnd thatâs what they need now, a brand-new schoolhouse.â
The mayor looked down the table at one of the men, Taylor.
âHavenât we found the school another building?â he asked.
âWe have,â Taylor said. âThe old Worth place.â
âAnother old house?â Kincaid asked. âAre we going to risk more of our childrenâs lives? What if that one collapses?â
âIt wonât,â the mayor said.
âMr. Mayor, these children need a new building,â Kincaid said. âWe need to have one built for them.â
âDr. Kincaid,â the mayor said, âyou havenât been a member of this community for very longââ
âYouâre right,â Kincaid said, cutting him off. âI havenât. So I donât know what these other gentlemen do.â He looked at the three men sitting between Nora and the mayor. âAre any of you carpenters?â
The man named Taylor hesitantly raised his hand. He was a heavy, middle-aged man who did, indeed, look like a carpenter.
âSo this job would fall to you, sir,â Kincaid said. âAll you would have to do is submit a bid to the town to get it, right?â
âWell . . .â
âNow hold on!â the mayor said.
âYou hold on, John,â Doc Edwin said, breaking into the conversation. âYouâre up for reelection next year.
